Women in Polo Matches

September 3, 1920

Formation of Feminine Teams Is Planned for Boston Tourney

BOSTON, Sept 2. - Polo played by women's fours, a distinct novelty in this country, though an established competition in England, is contemplated as a special feature of the interclub polo contests at the meeting of the Boston Fair Association at Readville, Sept. 30, Oct. 1 and 2. It is planned to form two or more teams of young women, who will play for special trophies.

     B. Nason Hamlin is in charge of the plans for the interclub tournament for the Copley-Plaza trophy. Four teams have already entered. They are the Westwood Wanderes, the Dedham Freebooters, the Myopia Canaries and the Norfolk Reds. The trophy was won last year by a Myopia team.

Several of the leading local players have entered ponies in the polo pony race to be held at the Waltham Fair, Sept. 9,10 and 11. The race will be at three-eights of a mile and will be open only to ponies that have played in competition. Be. Nason Hamlin has entered his pony, Max Pete, while John Bowditch, William Grosvenor, J.D. Clark and Lothrop Weld have also entered their mounts. A trophy has been offered by John Bowditch.
