French Woman Polo Team Defeats Club of Soldiers
August 18, 1922
Paris. Aug. 9 - After a controversy that had raged all week over the relative merit of men and women as polo players, in which advocates of women in the saddle were greatly outnumbered by those who ridiculed the idea, the habitues and visitors at Le Touquet were amazed and astounded when a team composed of three women licked the very stuffing out of three French officers yesterday.
To settle the matter, a Mrs. Fletcher had offered to form a team with two other women, challenging the French soldiers. In the most skillful manner her team outplayed and crushed the military group on the filed, and partisans of women's participation in sports hailed the event as a double victory.
Anxious to record the game in history, the names of the two toher players, who had not revealed their identity, were sought. Graciously they acceded to the request and announced themselves modestly as Bobby Egan, one of the leading figures in the sport, and Capt. Hawkins, the British player.
