Women Play Polo

August 13, 1910

Miss Eleanor Sears and Sister Players Cause Sensation at Narragansett Pier.

Narragansett Pier, R.I., Aug. 13. - In this resort of sensational happenings, as far as the late season is oncerned, at least another event in which women participated took place today on the new polo field.

A polo team comprised of Miss Eleanor Sears, Miss Handy and two other girls opposed a team of men made up of C. P. Beadleston, C.C. Rumsey, Devereaux Milburn and a member of the victorious international team.

About four periods were played, and the young women acquitted themselves very creditably. Two of them rode astride, and because the other two rode side-saddle they were considerably handicapped, but nevertheless played a surprising strong game against their male opponents.

The women are taking unusual interest in polo, and there is now some talk of a polo match between two teams composed of women at the Point Judith tournament.

On the polo field to-day were seen Mrs. Antelo Devereaux in a riding habit and Mrs. Charles c. Rumsey, also, in a riding habit.
